Hot afternoon run

I don't know how much longer I can bear running in the late afternoon.  I was really scorching this afternoon.  I might have to take some of my afternoon runs inside (especially the longer ones - over 5 or 6 miles).  Most of the races I plan to run will either be in the morning or late evening (after 6 pm).

While my running used her Garmin, I took my phone on the run to see how the smartphone running apps compare (accuracy, etc.).  I've been having problems with my Blackberry (battery not keeping a charge, the phone re-booting unexpectedly, etc.) so I hadn't been using the apps.  Today I used the Trimble Outdoors AllSport GPS app.  My results was very close to the results on my co-worker's Garmin.  I really like the feedback (graphics, maps, charts, etc.).  However, the one thing I dislike about this app is that every time the phone freezes this is logged as a resting period.

Training for the Next Big Event - Country Music? - Week#1

One of running pals just registered for Country Music (half), and asked if I would too. The race is only 8 weeks away, so that means I'll have to really work hard to get in the miles.  I found a 16-week training plan in the March/April '12 edition of Women's Running magazine - "The Busy's Half-Marathon Plan". The focus of the training is I'm only doing latter 'half' (sorry for the pun) of the plan - it has the higher mileage long runs (longest being 12). So here I go!

Week 1 (3/4/ - 3/10/12)
Sun (3/4/12) - Cross training
Mon (3/5/12) - Tempo
Tues (3/6/12) - Cross training (lower body strength training)
Wed (3/7/12) - Rest
Thurs (3/8/12) - Long Run (10 miles)
Fri (3/9/12) - Cross training (upper body strength training)
Sat (3/10/12) - 5K race (interval training)

More info on Birmingham's newest race event

Earlier this year (1/17/2011), I put a post on my blog about a new race event that American Idol star Ruben Studdard was working to bring to Birmingham later this year. This event will be one of several weekend-long events supporting the Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of  Children in the Music Arts -  http://www.rubenstuddardfoundation.org/. Well, the website for the Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend featuring the BHAM Marathon - http://www.bhammarathon.com/.  I am very excited about the event and am spreading the word to get momentum for the event.

Here's a press release I found on the ahotu Marathons website:   http://marathons.ahotu.com/archives/850-ruben-studdard-bringing-new-marathon-to-birmingham.  I am sure there are others.

I hope you will spread the word among your fellow running buds so this can be a great inaugural event for Birmingham's native son as well as the City of Birmingham.

I encourage everyone to go the the BHAM Marathon website and sign up for the newsletter so you can stay up-to-date on the race details.

Turkey Trots - Thanksgiving Day Runs

Feel guilty about stuffing yourself with stuffing this Thanksgiving Day?  Well, get out and exercise before craving up that turkey.  I ran a 10K this morning (Montclair Run) - it was just a gorgeous day not to run.  Also, I had several friends to run a half-marathon (the 13.1 series) in Atlanta.  Check out some of my links (active.com is a very good one) to find runs in your area.

And if you don't do a run, at least move.  You'll feel so much better about yourself for doing it!
